Read the whole chapter, but this chapter is also super weird.  Focus on the parts about Soaphead Church’s interaction with Pecola.  It is okay if you feel a little confused by it.

1. What does it mean that Soaphead Church is a “clean old man”?

3. What does Pecola ask Soaphead Church for?  How does he “get” them for her?
4. How does Soaphead Church justify what he has done to/for Pecola?

This chapter is about Pauline Breedlove-- the narrator switches between a third person narrator to a first person narrator.  The first person narration is in italics.
