I provided you with some Reading Comprehension Questions from a recent English Regents.  Complete them by Friday.

Late work is due on Friday.

FINAL EXAMS will be given on Tuesday June 10, and Wednesday June 11.  Your exam will be a Critical Lens Essay.  Be sure to know the titles of your texts as well as the names of  the authors who wrote them.

Write a Q26 and Q27 response to "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas and "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson.

Directions for Q26 and Q27 are here.  Please note that I made a mistake on some of your sheets.  The controlling idea is "death."

If you were absent on Monday, you have not received the second poem.  You will not be allowed to make up that worksheet unless you have a note.  If you were absent you should look the poem up online and use it to respond to the prompts.

HW #5 Read Chapters 18 and "19" (due Thursday May 22)
1) What does Frank throw away at the beginning of this chapter? What might be symbolic about it?
2) Describe Frank's going away party.
3) Describe Frank's voyage to America.
4) How is Frank welcomed to America?
5) Explain the one word ending in Chapter 19 of "Tis." (Some of you might find that this page is not in your book, but this is how the book ends, I promise)

You should have read the first ten pages of Chapter 17 on Monday in class and answered the questions on the board.  If you have not done that, please do so for partial credit.

HW #4 Finish reading Chapter 17 (due Wednesday May 21.)
1) Why are the “page sixteens” “illegal”?  Why are people so fascinated?  Consider what you know about Catholicism in your answer.

2) What job does Angela take on?  How does Frank feel about this job?

3) What job does Malachy Jr take on?  How is his subsequent firing an example of class discrimination?

HW #2 Chapter XV (15) (due Friday)
Read the chapter.  Identify the three most important events in this chapter.

HW #3 Chapter XVI (16) (due Tuesday 5/20)

1) Describe the scene with Mr. Harrington.  How does this scene add to our understanding of class discrimination in this text?  

2)  What does Frank agree to do for Mrs. Finucane?  Based on what you read, decide if he was justified in taking this job.  

3)   Why does Frank decide to work for Mr. McCaffrey?

HW #1 Chapter XIV- 14

1.  Where does Frank go after the fight with Laman?  What is it like there?

2.  What does Frank have to do to survive?  Be specific.

3. Why is Frank sorry that the deaf Dominican priest has died?

4.  What does Frank do that gets him in trouble at the library?

5.  What does Frank do to prepare for this “big job”?  

6.  How does he become the laughingstock of the neighborhood?

HW #4
Write a sample lesson plan for your chapter.  It doesn't have to be fully thought out, but your notes should include at least an aim, do now, and a suggestion for a textual focus.

Also, please have the foreman of your group send me a quick email identifying which period class you are in, which chapter you are in charge of and who your classmates are.  I'll be opening a document for you to copy and paste your homework questions into.

2. The McCourts moved back to Ireland when Frankie was four. Why does Mr. McCourt still not have a steady job when Frankie is nine?

3. What is the Arch Confraternity? Why does Question Quigley tell Frankie he has to join?

4. Dad decides Frankie is old enough to be an altar boy. Why does Mam not want Frankie to be an altar boy?

Choose one of the following prompts to  agree or disagree with in up to three paragraphs:

1- Malachy McCourt is a good father.

2- Storytelling is a positive force in Frankie's life.

a) the paragraph proves your point of view regarding the prompt,

b) the paragraph includes textual evidence that is quoted, cited, and integrated properly, and

c) the paragraph is well developed and follows the conventions of written English.

HW #6 Read the article about the history of violence in Ireland.  

Using facts from the article, 1) describe “the terrible things [the English did to us] for eight hundred long years” referenced in McCourt's list of “the Irish version” of the miserable childhood. Then 2) explain what made McCourt include this line in his list of woes.

All Classes:  Your essay midterm will be on Tuesday and Wednesday January 21-22, 2014.  It will be a critical lens essay.  Pds 5 & 7, expect a topic on Education, referring to Frederick Douglass.  Pds 9 & 10, expect a topic regarding jealousy and desire, referring to A View From the Bridge.  Remember that you have to include a paragraph about a book other than the book we are currently reading.
