Choose a song that you feel is a song of protest or a song that identifies problems in the world.  Print or write down a stanza or two that you wish to explore. Write a one paragraph explanation regarding why you have chosen this song.

Read Chapters 3 & 4 in FD
  1. What is ironic about the way that slaves argue amongst themselves regarding the greatness of their masters?
  2. a-Who is Mr. Gore? b-What does Mr. Gore do to Demby?  c-How does Mr. Gore explain his actions to the master?
  3. What other examples does Frederick Douglass offer regarding the helplessness of slaves under the law? Be specific.
  4. Douglass states that a slave must “never answer a word” to any unjust complaints of the master.  Provide four examples (total) from Chapters 3 and 4 that show how the slaves were silenced, both socially and legally.

Sophomores:
HW: Read pages pg. 53-63 (the rest of the play)
  1. What is a hung jury?

  3. What do #3 and #8 act out?  What does #5 tell the jurors that explains what was wrong with the way they acted it out?

  6. What is the point of the discussion about about wearing glasses?  How does it relate to the case?
  7. What does it say about #3’s personality that he is the last one standing on guilty?

2) what the slaves got on allowance day and their reaction to it,
3) what about the songs sung by the slaves makes Frederick Douglass cry.

  1. Juror #11 describes the irony of being one of the twelve men in the jury room.  What is ironic about their situation?
  2. What is the reasonable doubt expressed by jurors #11, #2 and #6?
  3. Why do the jurors reconstruct the crime scene again?  What factors are being checked in this new version?
  4. Based on your response to the previous question, why do some of the jurors begin to swing back to guilty?
