For Those Attending the AIDS Walk NYC on Sunday May 19...

We will be meeting at the General Team Meeting Area.  Look for a table that says:
Queens Voc R=AIN /Aviation High School GSA

Enter Central Park at 59th St and 5th Ave-- from there, follow signs for AIDS Walk Team sign up.

I will wait for people to show up on 59th and 5th Ave from 8:30-9:00.  After that, we will be in the Team Info area.

HW Finish the Q27 paragraph about "A Psalm of Life" by H. W. Longfellow.

27 Choose a specific literary element (e.g., theme, characterization, structure, point of view, etc.) or literary technique (e.g., symbolism, irony, figurative language, etc.) used by Longfellow. Using specific details from the poem, in a well-developed paragraph, show how the author uses that element or technique to develop the passage.

Check your paragraph for the following elements:
1) Obvious use of a literary element.  Underline it.
2) Define your literary element-- (if you are writing about theme, be sure to explain what a theme is in general)
3) Use of a direct quote from the poem.  Put quotes around it if you haven't already.
4) Explanation of how and why the literary element is used in the text.  If you have not done this, do it now.

HW Read the lyrics to the song "I Am a Rock" by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Answer the questions on the sheet provided in class today.

I have given credit for your first drafts of your comparative essays. You will work on the final, typed drafts of your essays in class today and tomorrow.
These essays must be submitted to me via Google Drive with the following title:

HW #1 Finish answering the questions referring to "A Psalm of Life" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that we started in class.
Essay due Tuesday
Using quotes from both texts, write an essay comparing Martin Luther King's philosophy to Malcolm Xs.  Be sure to reference the elements of SOAPSTone and other literary and rhetorical devices in your essay.

Pd 6:
Test Friday and Monday: Comparative essay on what we have learned about North Korea and Night.

Prepare to have a multiple choice test on the speech on Monday or Tuesday.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!!!! Find the text of an allusion in "I Have a Dream."  Write a short summary of the piece and explain why it was alluded to in the speech.

Read pgs 104-115
1. Describe Elie's father's last days.
2. Describe the anti-climax of liberation (an anti-climax is an ending that you would expect to be exciting, but is not).
